Under first year head coach Emilio Nieves, the Stuyvesant Swingers, the boys’ golf team, has regained the Bronx/ Manhattan division title after a year-long hiatus.
“I’m very happy, one of the goals was to win the division and we accomplished that,” Nieves said. In addition to sending four players to the Individual Golf Championships, the Swingers were seeded fourth in the Division A City Championships.
In the first round, the team squared off against the Brooklyn Technical High School Engineers on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. With a score of 4-1, the Swingers defeated the Engineers without losing a hole in each of the four matches they won. “We played a pretty easy team and beat them,” said sophomore Alex Robinson.
Nieves said, “I expected to win, but it’s just going to get harder as the playoffs progress.”
In their second appearance in the second round in the last four years, the Swingers faced fifth-seeded Curtis High School. While freshman Alexander Shin was able to win his match easily, junior Joshua Clemente won on the ninth and final hole. Stuyvesant won the nail-biter three matches to two. Nieves said, “We basically won by one foot.”
Junior Frederick Meyer and freshman Cody Levine both lost their matches in the absence of the team’s top senior, Tahlor Levine.
The Swingers will play in the semifinals on Tuesday, June 5 at Forest Park golf course against top-seeded Benjamin Cardozo High School, “a very good team and a tough match, “ said Nieves.
