In an attempt to make high school baseball safer, the City Council has instituted a plan that will ban the use of aluminum baseball bats in the 2008 season. Wooden bats, which are exclusively used in the minor and major leagues, will be required. Despite college baseball’s use of aluminum bats, the City Council felt that it was necessary eliminate them from the Public Schools Athletic League. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s protests of the action were in vein as the act was passed over his veto. “It’s going to teach the kids how to swing the bat the right way,” said John Carlesi, head coach of the Hitmen, the boys’ baseball team.
