Sophomores Daniel Goldstern and William Oh led the race for Junior Caucus in the Student Union (SU) primaries on Tuesday, May 29, with a total of 86 votes.
Goldstern and Oh came in first over their only opposition, sophomores Philip Kim and Jenny Han, who received 74 votes. Both will advance to the general elections on Wednesday, June 6.
Goldstern, running for Junior President, and Oh, running for Junior Vice President, are both new to the SU. They view this inexperience in school politics as a positive asset to their campaign rather than a setback. “We bring fresh ideas to the table,” said Goldstern. “We would have a good balance between representing what students want and what we think would be [good for the junior class].” Goldstern and Oh would work with other SU members to gain experience in working with the administration.
Goldstern and Oh plan to set up a system in which they would meet with student representatives from each homeroom on a regular basis. These meetings would provide them with a chance to make various decisions based on input from the juniors themselves.
To avoid the issues that this year’s junior class faced with a cancelled college trip, Goldstern and Oh said they would “plan [college trips] a lot earlier in the year so that [next year’s juniors] don’t run into the same problems,” said Goldstern.
Goldstern and Oh plan to have many events and activities for the junior entire, including Bowling Night and Junior Comedy Night. Many new event ideas would come from students in their grade and would be communicated through their homeroom representatives. Also, Goldstern and Oh plan to have “events that will help relieve the stress of junior year,” said Oh.
Their primary goal is to establish better communications between juniors and the SU so students can play a more active role in their government. Said Goldstern, “We really want kids to know what Junior Caucus stands for and what it’s all about.”
