Peglegs and Spartans Win Their First

June 5th, 2007 · By DAVID DEGUZMAN

After a 10-game losing streak and a season of many defeats in 2005, the Peglegs, the boys’ varsity football team, were able to turn things around for once when they defeated Frankin K. Lane High School by a score of 24-8 on September 22, 2006. Not only was it their first win of the season, but it was their first earned win since the last game of the 2004 season. In 2005, their only victory since then had been a forfeit by Adlai Stevenson High School.

The Peglegs eventually went on to finish with an even 5-5 record, including wins at this year’s homecoming on October 15 and a 49-0 victory against Automotive High School on November 5, where the Peglegs scored twenty points more than they had scored in 2005.

The Spartans, the boys’ wrestling team, had similar achievements this year. For two seasons prior to this year, the Spartans ended up at the bottom of the rankings, finishing each season with a 1-11 record. Things were going downhill for the wrestling program as Assistant Principal Physical Education and Health Martha Singer threatened to cut the program that hadn’t won a meet since February 2004.

The team was finally victorious when they won, 48-34, against South Shore High School on January 4. Eventually, they would finish the season 3-7, their best record in three years.

Considering the performances of these teams prior to this year, both the Peglegs and the Spartans seem to be going in the right direction.
