Plans For Pier 40 Include Tearing It Down

In the spring of 2007, the Hudson River Park trusts requested proposals for the renovation of Pier 40. The Performing Arts Center proposed a “Vegas on the Hudson” transformation, which would result in an overhaul of the public athletic facilities. Home to five of Stuyvesant’s sports teams, the pier would be changed to include a theatre multiplex, several restaurants, Cirque du Soleil and numerous retail stores. This raised much protest and concern from parents, which prompted a public hearing to be held in order to quiet the complaints. The loss of the pier for the use to Stuyvesant teams would be a tremendous blow to its athletics program.
