Juniors Michelle Lee and Lauren Gonzalez led the Senior Caucus primary for the grade’s President and Vice President, respectively, with 184 votes.
Lee, whose ticket won by 58 votes, is currently Junior President. Within the Student Unior (SU), she has served as student coordinator for college trips and co-coordinator of junior prom.
Gonzalez has previously been Sophomore Vice President and Freshman Vice President. She has served as co-coordinator of junior prom and co-coordinator for two semiformal dances.
According to Lee, her ticket aims “to make senior year the most unforgettable.”
Lee and Gonzalez said they plan to create a Stuy Seniors ‘08 DVD that would include coverage of events like SING! and words from friends and teachers.
Looking to make senior year more enjoyable, Lee said they would organize senior faculty picnic/dinners for seniors to relax with their teachers. They also hope to make an official “Senioritis on the Wall” that will allow seniors to put up where they will be going to college, and to organize a Senior Broadway Night for seniors to attend discounted Broadway shows.
To prepare seniors for college, the Lee and Gonzalez said they will work with the English department for seniors to have college essay workshops. In addition, to make up for fewer junior college trips this year, they will plan a senior college trip in the fall.
Lee and Gonzalez emphasized communication with the rest of the grade. As the creator of the current junior class’s Web site, stuy08.com, Lee said she would improve the Web site by creating a registration function on the page so that important updates would be sent via e-mail to keep the seniors informed.
Lee said they will stick to past traditions, including crushlists, senior apparel, Senior Comedy Night, Senior Movie Nights, Senior-Faculty Sports Tournaments and the unofficial Senior Ski Trip.
Junior Andrew Kim, the presidential candidate in the opposing senior ticket, is currently Lee’s Vice President.
“It’s obviously not the greatest feelings in the world,” said Lee about running against Kim. “But it’s not like we’re instantly enemies. In fact, we are still great friends.”
Lee and Gonzalez said they view their opponents Andrew Kim and Vivian Liu as friendly competition and hope to keep the campaigns as clean as possible. “After all, friendship is more important than an election, and even if we don’t win, we’ll help them and still be really involved,” said Lee.
“We want to make Stuy a better place. It’s a passion,” said Lee. “We’re not doing it for the college record. We just both love being in the Student Union and everything it involves.”
