The Peglegs, the varsity football team, were eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday, October 20, when they Peglegs lost to Wadleigh High School, 8-6, in their final game at Brooklyn Technical High School Field.
Only the top four teams in the division advance to the playoffs and the current top four teams each hold a 7-1 record as of Monday, October 29.
Wadleigh senior Luis Mendoza scored the first points of the game when he ran a touchdown in the third quarter. Stuyvesant had a late rally: senior and full back Amos Dai rushed into the end zone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Stuyvesant failed to score the two-point conversion, and was unable to recover.
This was the latest in a series of losses in a season that has not gone according to the team’s plan. “We envisioned ourselves right now at about 5-1, not 3-3,” Peglegs coach Brian Sacks said before the game. “We’ve had two close losses where we lost the game in the last three minutes.”
The Peglegs were able to salvage a win on Friday, October 26 against Lafayette Educational Complex in the Peglegs’ final home game at Pier 40, 38-0. The victory evensed Stuyvesant’s record to 4-4 and keepts the Peglegs in sixth place in the division.
The Peglegs intercepted a pass that led to a touchdown scored by senior and wide receiver Hasan Ullah in the first quarter. In the second quarter, senior and quarterback Shafi Alam threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior Joshua Clemente. Senior James Morrissey then ran five yards for a touchdown. By halftime, the Peglegs were leading, 24-0. Second-half touchdowns by junior Nick Goldin and Dai, combined with a total of four interceptions and two fumbles by Lafayette, sealed the win for the Peglegs.
The Peglegs can finish the season at best with a 6-4 record, one win better than last year’s record of 5-5. “We’ll definitely win the rest of our games,” Morrissey said.
