Trainers, Not Managers Keep Peglegs on Feet

The Penguins, the girls’ swimming team, defeated rivals Bronx High School of Science, 59-43, on Tuesday, October 23 at Lehman College in the Bronx. Both teams were at the top of the Bronx-Manhattan girls’ division prior to the meet with undefeated records. Last season, the Bronx Science Wolverines defeated Stuyvesant, 61-41.

The Penguins got on the scoreboard early when Stuyvesant’s A team won the 200-yard medley relay by 0.13 seconds over the Wolverines’ A team and the Penguins’ B team placed third. The Penguins earned seven of the event’s possible 10 points.

In seven events, Stuyvesant finished second and third place to the Wolverines, including the 50-yard freestyle for which junior and Penguin Nora Cunningham swam a personal-best 25.94 seconds and finished second.

Another close finish occurred in the 100-yard freestyle. Stuyvesant came in first and third, earning five additional points in the standings. Junior Marta Sowinski claimed a season-best time of 57.15 seconds, edging junior and Wolverine Jane Kim by 0.23 seconds.

The Penguins dominated the 100-yard backstroke. Freshman Ashley Qian and sophomore Stephanie Jou came in first and second, respectively.

The Penguins continued their success Friday, October 26 against Hunter College High School with a 58-37 win.
They defeated Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School on Monday, October 30, in their final meet of the season, 55-30. The Penguins are now the lone undefeated team, with a 7-0 record. “We definitely have a chance of winning [the city championship] this year,” senior and co-captain Brittany Bishop said.

Stuyvesant’s first opponent in the postseason will be either Tottenville or Midwood High School, depending on the results of their first-round meet Tuesday, October 30.
