Stuyvesant defeated Hunter, winning 7.25 out of nine total points, on Friday, October 19. The Untouchables won all nine points in their previous encounter with Hunter Wednesday, October 3.
Both teams have undergone significant changes in their roster since the beginning of the season.
“We’re definitely stronger this year and Hunter’s gotten weaker,” coach Joel Winston said. “They lost three incredible players. Two seniors graduated and their best fencer this season is not playing for the A line.”
“The way we are this year, we could have beaten them the way they were last year,” sophomore and A2 fencer Max Blitzer said.
The win against Hunter followed a comfortable 6-3 win against Long Island City (LIC) High School Wednesday, October 17, though both of the Untouchables’ A line fencers were injured. A teammate substituted for sophomore and A1 fencer Ian Armstrong, who has won all his duels this season, 5-0, in one bout. Blitzer, who is also undefeated this season, did not fence during the match.
The Untouchables won the B and C bouts, while Armstrong earned Stuyvesant’s lone victory of the A bouts. “Out of all the teams, LIC improved the most this year. They have a decent solid team,” Winston said. “But […] we have incredible depth. Many of our subs are strong enough to be starters on other teams.”
