Decisive C Game sends Boys Bowling to Second Round

November 20th, 2007 · By CONNIE LEONG

For the third time on the last frame, senior Andrew Yang released the ball. It swerved to the right, hugging the gutter, before turning back toward the pins for a strike. Yang had hit a turkey (three consecutive strikes) for a total score of 154 in the decisive C Game.

It was on November 8, and Stuyvesant’s varsity boys bowling team, which finished the regular season 12-0, was playing its first round match against the Blue Demons of Beacon High School, who finished the regular season 10-2. Stuyvesant, after winning its A Game 610-482, lost its B Game 456-512, forcing a tiebreaking C Game. They won, 606-518, ending the match and sending them to the second round of the playoffs.

“It was definitely a tough win,” said senior and captain Scott Ritter. “I think that’ll really help us in the next rounds when we face tougher and tougher competition. We’ll have to step up our game just as we did towards the end of today.”

In addition to Yang’s 154, in the match winning C Game, sophomore Leo Ernst bowled a 149, junior Simon Man bowled a 162 and Ritter bowled a 149.

Although Stuyvesant did not bowl its potential best in the B game, they recovered sufficiently in the C Game to move on to second round of playoffs against New Utrecht at Maple Lanes. Since they had advanced to the third round of playoffs last year, the team was confident in achieving similar success.

“We’ll make it past second round definitely if we try hard enough. But the third round’s going to be pretty tough because it’s Staten Island, but we’re not going to be intimidated,” Yang said.
