Making full use of their home field advantage, the Pinheads, Stuyvesant’s varsity girls’ bowling team, defeated the John F. Kennedy High School Lady Knights on Thursday, November 8 at Leisure Time Bowl, the Pinheads’ home alley. “We felt more comfortable,” said junior Karen Mui, who nailed three strikes and three spares on her way to bowling a 149, the highest score on the B team.
With victories by the A and B teams making up for the C team’s loss, the Pinheads, who finished the regular season 10-0, handed the 8-2 Lady Knights a 2-1 defeat. Rookie and junior Tiffany Wan bowled a personal best 183, with three strikes and five spares.
“[I have] learned not to worry so much about each frame and how to take care of each pin,” said Wan.
According to Pinheads’ coach Peter Bologna, Wan “saved the A team,” compensating for the struggles of other team members. Wan was the only member of the A team who scored above 120.
The Pinheads then narrowly defeated the Engineers of Brooklyn Technical High School, 2-0, on Wednesday, November 24. Senior Sue Yee Chen bowled a 138 as the Pinheads won game A, 517-498. Senior Connie Leong was the top scorer in game B with 131 points. Stuyvesant clinched the win with a 469-434 score in game B.
This is the first time in their three year history that the Pinheads have made it past the first round of the playoffs. Stuyvesant will face Susan Wagner High School in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 20.
After a five-day break, the Pinheads will head into the game relaxed and clear-minded.
“As long as [the girls] try their best, I can’t complain. I’m proud of them,” said Bologna.
