Junior Caucus- Masudur Rahman and Rosanna Sobota

June 2nd, 2008 · By ASHLEY SEENAUTH

With 61 votes, sophomores Masudur Rahman and Rosanna Sobota placed second out of nine tickets in the running for junior caucus in the Student Union (SU) primaries on Tuesday, May 27. They will advance to the Wednesday, June 4 general elections.

Rahman, who is running for junior caucus president, has been a part of the Freshman and Sophomore Advisory Council. He also has leadership experience as President of the Young Entrepreneurs Association of Stuyvesant (YEA), a club that discusses business tactics to raise money. “I have a lot of experience in leading others and organizing events like the first YEA Baby Day,” said Rahman, referring to an event publicizing the YEA club.

Sobota, who is running for junior caucus vice president, served as an SU Budget Director this school year and was a member of the Freshman advisory council. “I am already comfortable with the SU. I have had experience with budget meetings and council meetings and I’m comfortable speaking there,” Sobota said.

Rahman and Sobota have several things on their agenda. They aim to make junior year less overwhelming. They also plan to publicize the college trips more effectively, increase the advertising of Supply Line, and make better use of homeroom time. “If homeroom was treated more seriously, then kids would attend more,” Sobota said. Rahman and Sobota want to get handouts and announcements distributed efficiently in homeroom, and use homeroom as a place to poll the junior class on important issues.

Rahman and Sobota also acknowledge the value of cooperation and plan to respect school faculty in order to prove that the junior class is responsible. “We will continue to understand that [Principal Stanley] Teitel and [Assistant Principal Organization Randi] Damesek are our superiors,” Sobota said.

Rahman and Sobota plan to increase communication. “Our main goal is to keep people informed,” Sobota said.

Rahman said, “I feel like most of the past class presidents didn’t spread word of most of the events properly. Together Rosanna and I know most of the student body and that could help us spread awareness.”

If elected, Rahman and Sobota will organize student-run study groups for SAT Subject tests and Advanced Placement exams. Rahman and Sobota will continue and improve on events like college trips and Junior Prom.

“Masudur and I have worked very well together in the past. We are very good friends and that allows us to help each other work on our strengths and weaknesses which would make us stronger candidates,” Sobota said.
