Senior Caucus- Philip Kim and Jenny Han

June 2nd, 2008 · By ROBERT COLGAN

Juniors Philip Kim and Jenny Han led the race for senior caucus in the Student Union (SU) primaries on Tuesday, May 27 with a total of 150 votes.

They will advance to the general elections on Wednesday, June 4 along with juniors Eunju Namkung & Aaron Ghitelman, who came in second with 116 votes.

In their campaign, Kim, running for senior caucus president, and Han, running for senior caucus vice president, emphasize their experience in the SU.

Kim is the current junior caucus president, and served as freshman caucus vice president and sophomore caucus vice president. Han is the current junior caucus vice president, and was a Freshmen and Sophomore Advisory Council member.

“I’ve been in the SU for all three years I’ve been at Stuyvesant, so I know all the ins and outs of the SU. I know what’s practical, what can be done, what we need to work on,” Kim said. “A lot of the candidates that are running, they don’t have the experience that we have, and they don’t know a lot of what is practical and what isn’t.”

“Compared to our opponents, we are really qualified and we have so much more experience,” Han said.

As this year’s Junior Caucus, Kim and Han coordinated many events, such as the first Career Day, the Valentine’s Day candy sale which, according to Han, raised about 700 dollars for the juniors, a comedy night, a junior-senior basketball game and three college trips.

They were also in charge of Building Stuy Community, the organization behind the StuySpace campaign, an initiative encouraging students to properly clean up for themselves around Stuy.

If elected, Kim and Han will create new senior apparel and organize traditional senior events. They promise a senior theme day every month, a fourth college trip, two senior comedy nights, senior-faculty tournaments and “an amazing graduation speaker, and an awesome prom,” Kim said.

Kim and Han have already chosen a cube coordinator for their class’ Mnemonics Project box and plan on hosting a “block party” to celebrate the filling of their cube.

They will strive to improve communication between the SU and the student body.

“There’s definitely more room for better communication and more student involvement [in the SU],” Han said. “I’ve learned that the SU does so much to help Stuyvesant, but so many kids still don’t appreciate that, and I think that has to do with the fact that we can try harder to have a better system of communication.”

Kim and Han created a Web site for the class of 2009 this year and they will continue to improve and expand on the site, if elected. They plan to use the Web site as a communication tool with the rest of the junior class by putting polls and calendars on it.

“[Kim] and I have experience, and we also have creativity, and we will balance them both out to do everything we can to improve senior year and use the prior knowledge we have,” Han said.
