Firetruck By Divya Dayal

A Stuyvesant junior was arrested on Thursday, November 19 at 6:15 p.m. under the charges of starting two fires in boys’ bathrooms on Tuesday, November 17. According to the New York Times article “Student Charged in Fire at Stuyvesant High,” published on Friday, November 20, charges included second-degree attempted arson, fifth-degree arson and reckless endangerment.

The student appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday, November 20, and was released on a 2,500-dollar bail.

According to the police, the student was caught on surveillance cameras as exiting the sixth and seventh floor boys’ bathroom seconds before each of the fires began. The multiple other fires that followed Tuesday’s, however, have yet to be traced to anyone.

According to Principal Stanley Teitel, the investigation to find the other arsonist is still ongoing and further information cannot be released at this moment.

  1. more important than the actual crime,

I am interested to learn what his motif was, because this is not a typical school with typical teens that just want typical fun.

I must have had some conspiracy going on.

  2. In New York State, a juvenile is anyone under the age of 16. I’m not sure he was charged as a minor in this case.

    • Defendants in prosecution cases of ages 16-18 may be tried as either a juvenile or adult depending on the case presented by the defendant, so it’s possible he was charged as a minor.
