    Girls' Track Finishes Fourth at Boroughs

    The girls' track season had been somewhat bittersweet. While there were some amazing performances by some of Stuyvesant's runners, and great leadership, the girls faced many obstacles. First of all, there were the nagging injuries that plagued many members of the team, including star runner Naomi Reynolds, whose knee problem forced her out of the Borough Championships. There were shin splints, knee problems, sprained ankles, and stress fractures. On top of this, there was the touchy issue of outdoor practice in post-September 11 New York. The team was not allowed to run outside of the building until a week before Boroughs, much later than the boys team. Because of this, practicing became a lot more difficult. Many teams would have simply given up, backed down against all the challenges they faced. But when you have as much spirit and pride as the Stuyvesant girls' track team, giving up wasn't a consideration.

    Absence of Star Runner Leaves Girls? Track Team in Lurch

    Amalia della Paolera glanced up anxiously at the poster taped to the wall. Around her, a large crowd of runners, parents, and coaches searched the sheet for the official team placings. It was 10 P.M. at the Armory, and the Stuyvesant team had been in the building since 11:30 that morning. As she read down the sheet, her suspicions were confirmed.
